Published data on the limits of water intakes of Central Asian countries in 2023 from the Amu Darya and Syr Darya
Tajik media holding "Asia-Plus" has published data on how much water each of the Central Asian countries will receive in 2023 from the Amu Darya and Syr Darya basins.
The limits of water intakes of Central Asian countries were approved in November last year in Ashgabat during a meeting of the Interstate Coordinating Water Management Commission (ICWC).
According to Asia-Plus, according to the limit, in just one year (from October 1, 2022 to October 1, 2023), water intake from the Amu Darya basin should amount to 55.4 billion cubic meters, of which 15.7 billion fall on the inter-vegetation period (until April 1, 2023).
Under this agreement, Uzbekistan will receive about 23.6 billion cubic meters of water, Turkmenistan – 22 billion, Tajikistan - 9.8 billion.
The limit of water intake from the Syr darya basin is 4.2 billion cubic meters, of which Uzbekistan will receive 3.3 billion cubic meters, Kazakhstan – 452 million, Tajikistan - 365 million, Kyrgyzstan - 47 million.
It is noted that the water content of the Amu darya basin in the growing season of 2022 was quite ambiguous: if in April-May it was within the normal range, then from June it decreased to 85-65%, and remained below the norm until the end of the period.
In the current water management situation, 79.1% of the total limit was used in the basin, including Tajikistan actually used 95.3%, Turkmenistan - 83.3%, Uzbekistan - 68.7% of the allocated norm.
Water intakes from the Syr darya basin from April 1 to September 30 , 2022 amounted to 10.1 billion cubic meters with a limit of 11.8 billion cubic meters .
The next, 84th meeting of the ICWC will be held in Dushanbe in April 2023, where issues of water supply during the growing season of the new agricultural season will be additionally discussed.
