Azerbaijan has become the first Shiite Muslim country to appoint its ambassador to Israel two months after announcing the opening of an embassy in Tel Aviv, The Times of Israel reports.

According to media reports, this position will be occupied by the Deputy Minister of Education of the republic Mukhtar Mammedov. Until recently, there was not a single diplomatic corps of a Shiite country on the territory of Israel.

The appointment took place following the official visit of Azerbaijani Deputy Foreign Minister Fariz Rzayev to Israel. Speaking after landing, Rzayev said that after his country's decision to open an embassy in Israel, "the sky is the limit for bilateral relations between the two countries."
