The United Nations has declared March 30 the International Zero Waste Day, supporting the project carried out under the patronage of the wife of Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan - Emine Erdogan "Zero Waste".

The project, which emerged five years ago, is aimed at taking the necessary actions to combat the disposal and elimination of hazardous waste at the local level, climate change, the creation of a recycling system by municipalities, as well as the preparation of advanced waste reuse programs.

In September, Emine Erdogan met with UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres in New York and they signed a declaration of goodwill on the Global Zero Waste project.

"We are committed to promoting the zero-waste approach worldwide and sharing best practices for its wider acceptance and implementation. Moreover, we are committed to promoting responsible waste production and consumption," the document says.

The declaration also calls on UN Member States, UN system organizations and members of civil society, the private sector, the media and local governments to coordinate strategies, approaches and responses to help accelerate the global transition to a closed-loop economy and reduce the negative impact of waste on climate change.

Following the adoption of the resolution on the International Zero Waste Day, a zero-waste summit will be held in Istanbul, the main task of which will be to involve the younger generation in the fight against climate change.
