Researchers from the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) have concluded that in many parts of Mars, the wind force is sufficient for turbines to produce electricity, Рһуѕ.org reports.

Previously, scientists believed that it would not be possible to turn wind into energy with the help of terrestrial wind turbines on Mars, since the atmosphere on the planet is very thin, and despite the high wind speed, its strength will not be enough for energy generation.

But astronomers from NASA, together with colleagues from the University of Washington in Seattle, have discovered places on Mars where there is a wind of sufficient strength to produce tangible amounts of energy.

To do this, they applied to the Red Planet a climate model used to predict the weather on Earth, which takes into account factors such as the amount of solar radiation, the level of dust and thermal energy in the atmosphere and the landscape in different areas of the planet.

The researchers decided that wind turbines can be installed on the edges of craters and volcanic highlands, as well as in places of circular flows around the poles of the planet.

Scientists noted that given the high cost of transporting cargo to Mars, these devices will have to be created from lighter materials than on Earth.
