Transboundary water cooperation of the Aral Sea region countries discussed in Turkmenistan

The development of water diplomacy and the use of its tools were among the main issues at the seminar held by UNDP together with national partners in Ashgabat, according to a press release from the organization's representative office in Turkmenistan.
The participants of the meeting — representatives of various ministries and departments, public organizations and research centers - discussed the prospects for improving transboundary water cooperation of Turkmenistan with the countries of the Aral Sea basin, the impact of climate change on the water resources of the region, as well as gender and youth aspects of water diplomacy.

In his speech, the program analyst of the UNDP environmental portfolio in Turkmenistan, Farhat Orunov, noted that water diplomacy is an important tool for ensuring effective and sustainable management of shared water resources, ensuring a balance of interests of all states and strengthening cooperation between the countries of the region.
The seminar was organized within the framework of the project "Conservation and sustainable management of land resources and ecosystems of high natural value in the Aral Sea basin for multiple benefits", which is implemented by the Ministry of Agriculture and Environmental Protection of Turkmenistan and UNDP with the financial support of the Global Environment Facility (GEF).
The project aims to help neutralize land degradation by investing in joint integrated land use planning to restore and improve the use of land and water resources.
