Draft agreement on establishing direct baselines in the Caspian discussed in Moscow


The fifth meeting of the High Level Working Group on the Caspian Sea (HLWG) was held in Moscow on 13-15 December. The negotiations were attended by delegations from Azerbaijan, Iran, Kazakhstan, the Russian Federation and Turkmenistan, represented by the director of the Caspian Sea Institute Murat Atajanov.
Mikhail Petrakov, special representative of the President of the Russian Federation for delimitation and demarcation of the state border of the Russian Federation with neighboring CIS member states, chaired the meeting.
The parties continued discussing the draft agreement on the methodology for establishing straight baselines in the Caspian Sea. A review of cooperation in the Caspian took place.
The Communiqué of the Fifth Meeting of the High-Level Working Group on Caspian Sea Issues states that the next meeting of the HLWG will be held in Turkmenistan.
The previous, fourth meeting of the HLWG was held in May 2022 in Tehran.
