A practical seminar held in Turkmenabat by specialists from the Hydrometeorological Services operating in Ashgabat and regions of the country, as well as experts from the Ministry of Agriculture and Environmental Protection of Turkmenistan, UNDP and the Green Climate Fund was devoted to proper use of hydrological equipment and instruments that serve to monitor the hydrological regime of the waters of rivers, lakes, reservoirs and other water bodies.

The meeting was more like a master class. The theoretical knowledge gained was worked out in practice, and the international class expert from UNDP Lee Gardner, representing the German company OTT Hydromet GmbH, acted as a trainer. He told and showed the participants how modern instruments work to measure the speed of the flow of a reservoir and the water discharge in large and small rivers.

The seminar sessions were held on an irrigation canal - an artificial water works, which is “feeded” by the waters of the Amudarya River and created to irrigate the land and soil of the Chardzhou and Dyanev regions. Here, the participants practiced their acquired data processing skills using the OTT QReview software.

The use of these modern hydrological instruments will greatly facilitate the specialists of the Hydrometeorological Service the routine work of collecting daily indicators and storing these data in digital archives in electronic format.

The Turkmenabad meeting was organized within the framework of the project “Development of the national adaptation planning process in Turkmenistan”, aimed at increasing the capacity of institutions and the professionalism of specialists, in particular, the Hydrometeorological Service under the Ministry of Agriculture and Environmental Protection of Turkmenistan. Employees of the department are engaged in planning adaptation to climate change in vulnerable sectors of the national economy - agriculture and water.
