The Russian city of St. Petersburg will become the cultural capital of the CIS in 2023. The baton was passed to the northern capital of Russia by the Kyrgyz Karakol, which was assigned this status in 2022.

The presentation ceremony took place on Monday in Tashkent at the XV Forum of Creative and Scientific Intelligentsia of the CIS member states, which brought together more than 200 delegates from CIS countries, TASS reports.

"It is a great joy for Northern Palmyra, which is the cultural capital of Russia, to become the cultural capital of the entire CIS next year. And St. Petersburg has been an open city from the very beginning," said Stanislav Moldovanov, Chairman of the Committee for Culture of St. Petersburg.

Every year one of the cities of the Commonwealth receives the honorary status of the cultural capital of the CIS. The next capital is approved by the Council of Heads of the Commonwealth member States. The program is implemented with the assistance of the Interstate Fund for Humanitarian Cooperation of the member States of the association.

Recall that in 2012, the Turkmen city of Mary was declared the cultural capital of the CIS, and in 2016 this status was granted to the administrative center of the northern region of the country – Dashoguz.
