The Dostluk offshore field is located on the maritime border of Azerbaijan and Turkmenistan. It was discovered in 1986. According to various estimates, oil reserves are about 60 million tons, natural gas - 100 billion m3.

The ownership of the deposit has been a subject of dispute for a long time. In January 2021, Turkmenistan and Azerbaijan signed a memorandum of understanding on joint exploration, development and development of the Dostluk hydrocarbon field in the Caspian Sea.

The Azerbaijani Parliament ratified the MoU in February 2021, Turkmenistan - in March 2021.

LUKOIL expressed its intention to participate in the development of the Dostluk field in February 2021. In September of the same year, Vagit Alekperov recalled that LUKOIL has the strongest positions in the Caspian Sea among Russian companies, and he is interested in developing Dostluk.
