Central Asia: towards climate sustainable future


The two-day Central Asian climate change conference has started today in Almaty. Forum on the theme "Towards sustainable regional adaptation" has gathered over 200 delegates, including representatives of governmental and non-governmental agencies from the five regional countries, scientists, environmentalists, climatologists, hydrologists, as well as representatives of multilateral financial institutions and international organizations such as UN, UNDP, UNESCO, WHO, OSCE, World Bank, ADB. Among the key speakers, representing Turkmenistan - Gurbangeldi Allaberdiyev, national coordinator of the UN framework Convention on climate change, Batyr Ballyev, head of the Department of environmental protection of the state Committee for environmental safety, Guyzgeldi Bayjanov, Chairman of executive committee of IFAS. The program provides for several plenary and parallel sessions that will feature presentations on issues such as climate policy and national actions, science and research in climate change, best practices and technologies, financial aspects of adaptation to climate change, information services, sustainable economic development, gender aspects. The present event in Kazakhstan has to become a broader regional dialogue platform that will allow each category of audience to gather useful information. So, experts and researchers share the best practices, achievements and innovations in the field of scientific approach to adapt to the changing climatic regime. In turn, decision makers, checking the positions one of the pressing topic, will have the opportunity to develop a common vision and support it with specific practical measures to ensure climate resilient future. International institutions will be able to identify areas that require further enhanced engagement at the country and regional levels. Central Asian climate change conference, held for the third time, was organized in the framework of the "Climate Adaptation and Mitigation Program for Aral Sea Basin" with the support of the Regional environmental center (CAREC), the International Fund for Saving the Aral sea (IFAS) and the World Bank.
