The transition to the use of renewable energy sources and the reduction of methane emissions into the atmosphere have become the key topics of the joint scientific and practical conference of Turkmenistan and the European Union that has been opened in Ashgabat, ORIENT correspondent reports.

"In October of this year, President of Turkmenistan Serdar Berdimuhamedov instructed the government of the country to establish closer cooperation with the European Union in the environmental sphere. The current event is one of the examples of building constructive cooperation in this direction," European Union Ambassador to Turkmenistan Diego Ruiz Alonso said at the opening of the meeting.

Experts from the European Union, engaged in the development of EU policy in the field of transition to "green" energy, arrived in Ashgabat to participate in the forum. The European Union Commissioner for Energy Kadri Simson and the Acting Director General of the European Commission, Director General for Climate Action (DG CLIMA) Cleara de la Torre addressed the participants with a video message.

EU representatives stressed that Turkmenistan has enormous potential for the development of renewable energy sources, and the country's leadership is taking responsible measures to reduce harmful emissions into the atmosphere in accordance with its international obligations.

During the two-day conference, specialists from Turkmenistan's line ministries and departments, as well as scientific institutions, will discuss with colleagues from the European Union the introduction of renewable energy sources and ways to reduce emissions into the atmosphere through the regulation of legislation and the use of modern technologies.

On the first day of the conference, Turkmen specialists were also introduced to the policy, legislation, regional and international cooperation of the European Union in the field of "green" energy. The possibilities of EU investments in the development of renewable energy sources in Turkmenistan were discussed.

Also among the important topics of the conference are the prospects of Turkmenistan's supplies to the European Union of environmentally friendly and low–carbon energy carriers, including hydrogen.
