The Regional Environmental Center for Central Asia (CAREC) organized a webinar in Ashgabat on climate change and water resources in the region. The event within the framework of the USAID United States Agency for International Development “Smart Waters” gathered experts from the water sector of Turkmenistan, as well as professors from specialized universities in Uzbekistan and Tajikistan. The purpose of the webinar is to strengthen academic cooperation among Central Asian countries to create a platform for discussing regional water issues, conducting joint research and projects in this area. - If the webinars become part of our activity, and the specialists begin to communicate regularly to exchange experience, the application of scientific recommendations in the practice of agriculture will begin to be carried out more intensively. This refers to irrigation systems, rational use of water and a number of other issues,” Dovlet Dzhumakuliyev, coordinator of the CAREC project in Turkmenistan, notes. Together with professors of the Tashkent Institute of Irrigation and Agricultural Mechanization and the Tajik Research Institute of Hydraulic Engineering and Land Reclamation, experts discussed global climate change, its impact on water resources, and ways to improve the efficiency of land reclamation, crop irrigation, and innovation in this area. Currently, Central Asian countries and Afghanistan face many challenges related to the regulation and management of water resources. In recent years, as a result of an increase in air temperature, the glaciers of the Pamir and Tien Shan mountains began to thaw intensively, providing water to the Syr Darya and Amu Darya rivers.
