These days, the 50th anniversary of the discovery of one of the largest archaeological sites on the territory of Turkmenistan - the Gonurdepe settlement is being celebrated.

On this occasion, the Turkmen State Institute of Culture hosted a meeting of students and research staff of the university with a colleague of Viktor Sarianidi, who discovered Gonurdepe to the world, Nadezhda Dubova, head of the Center for Human Anthropoecology of the Institute of Ethnology and Anthropology of the Russian Academy of Sciences.

During the meeting, Nadezhda Dubova spoke about the invaluable contribution made by Viktor Sarianidi to the scientific understanding of the history of the ancient world. It was he who discovered Bactria and the riches of this country — more than 20 thousand gold artifacts; discovered Margiana (Ancient Margush) with its center in Merv, whose history dates back about 40 centuries.

These finds are significant not so much by the fact of the existence of these cities, but by the rich culture, the reflections of which were found during excavations led by the famous scientist. These studies allow us to talk about an entire civilization that existed on the territory of modern Turkmenistan, standing on a par with Egypt, Mesopotamia, the Indus River Valley and China.

The participants of the meeting discussed the uniqueness of the Gonurdepe settlement, one of the 300 famous settlements of Margiana, as well as plans to intensify scientific cooperation with foreign scientists in the post-pandemic period.
