The European Parliament and the EU member states have reached a preliminary agreement on the adoption of a law that will completely ban the sale of new gasoline and diesel cars starting in 2035, according to the website of the European Parliament.

The negotiators agreed that today passenger cars are one of the main environmental pollutants — they account for 61% of total CO2 emissions among all vehicles in the European Union.

Earlier, the European Commission adopted the "Fit for 55" agreement to achieve the EU climate goals aimed at reducing greenhouse gas emissions by 55% by 2030.

The EU transport system is the only sector where greenhouse gas emissions increased by 33.5% between 1990 and 2019. It is planned that by 2050 the EU will significantly reduce emissions of harmful substances into the atmosphere through the full transition of Europeans to electric vehicles.
