Turkmenistan, with its huge oil and gas reserves, is destined to play an important role in the world energy markets, Georgy Chikovani, Director General of the Oil and Gas Corporation of Georgia, said at the plenary session of the 27th International Conference "Oil and Gas of Turkmenistan".
He noted that the diversification of export routes and the creation of a multi-vector pipeline system are considered one of the main directions of the energy policy of Turkmenistan. In the same context, Chikovani mentioned the recent deal on swap supplies of Turkmen gas through Iran to Azerbaijan.
“Establishment of gas ties with Turkmenistan has always been at the center of the EU's strategic aspirations regarding the oil and gas resources of Central Asia,” Georgy Chikovani stressed, recalling that Turkmenistan has been considered part of the Southern Gas Corridor for more than 14 years.
This corridor can be expanded to handle additional flows of Azerbaijani as well as Central Asian gas, which gives Turkmenistan additional opportunities to promote its energy resources to alternative markets, the head of the Georgian Oil and Gas Corporation believes.
At the same time, he noted the importance of the agreement between Turkmenistan and Azerbaijan on joint exploration and development of the Dostluk field in the Caspian Sea.
“At the moment, the EU’s interests in the security and diversification of energy supplies are in line with Turkmenistan’s desire to diversify its gas export routes more than ever before,” Chikovani said, noting that not only the EU, but also Azerbaijan and Georgia are interested in natural gas supplies. from Turkmenistan, which has enough resources to meet the growing demand for energy.
In this vein, he called for a closer dialogue between the EU and the governments of the countries of the South Caucasus and Central Asia, as well as representatives of industry and international financial circles.
The 27th International Conference "Oil and Gas of Turkmenistan" opened in Ashgabat on Wednesday, October 26. The forum brought together high-ranking officials from Turkmenistan, representatives of the Energy Charter, heads of oil and gas companies from dozens of countries, industry professionals and experts from international organizations, providing an excellent opportunity to discuss at the global and regional levels the challenges that the energy industry is currently facing, ways to strengthen cooperation and attract investment to the hydrocarbon sector.
