According to the International Forum for Waste Electrical and Electronic Equipment (WEEE), 5.3 billion mobile phones will be thrown away in 2022 as many people do not recycle old phones, reports the BBC.

The study shows that there are about 16 billion mobile phones in the world, and in Europe almost a third of them are no longer in use.

An amount of electrical and electronic waste, from washing machines and toasters to tablet computers, will grow to 74 million tons per year by 2030, according to WEEE.

Just over 17% of e-waste is currently properly recycled globally, but the United Nations International Telecommunication Union has set a goal of raising this to 30% by 2023.

This year, the UK Royal Society of Chemistry launched a campaign promoting the mining of electronic waste to recycle new products. It is proposed to use these devices in the production of wind turbines, batteries for electric vehicles or solar panels, which will be crucial for reducing the level of harmful emissions into the atmosphere and combating pollution of the planet.
