The Caspian coast can host at least a million travelers a year and has huge tourism potential, Prime Minister Mikhail Mishustin said on Thursday.

“The Caspian coast can receive at least one million travelers annually. I mean, the potential is huge. Especially if you take into account the unique nature, opportunities for active recreation and health improvement,” he said, speaking at the Second Caspian Economic Forum in Moscow, Interfax reports.

According to the prime minister, practical agreements are needed between the Caspian states, which will allow increasing tourist exchanges. He suggested speeding up the coordination of a cooperation agreement.

“Iran submitted a draft agreement on cooperation between the Caspian states in the field of tourism for consideration by the parties. And at the suggestion of Azerbaijan, a draft agreement on cooperation in the field of organizing cruise routes along the Caspian Sea has been developed. I propose to expedite the coordination of these documents. And to agree on regular meetings of the leaders of the tourism industry. Together we will be able to create competitive travel products, open up new destinations, including by sea with visits to port cities,” Mishustin emphasized.

Tourism is one of the key areas of cooperation between Russia, Azerbaijan, Kazakhstan and Turkmenistan, the number of mutual tourist trips now reaches 12.5 million, head of the Federal Tourism Agency Zarina Doguzova said on Thursday.

“Tourism is one of the key areas of cooperation between our countries. The volume of mutual tourist flows already today is 12.5 million trips. The potential is much more,” Zarina Doguzova, head of Rostourism, wrote in her telegram channel following the results of participation in the Second Caspian Economic Forum.

According to Doguzova, during the round table with representatives of the countries participating in the forum, areas of joint work for the near future were determined.

“The key tasks in tourism in the Caspian region today are to increase the availability of tourist destinations, develop resort areas, develop cross-border routes, launch cruise links between countries,” the head of Rostourism added.

She recalled that the “Peter the Great” cruise liner is currently being completed in Astrakhan for cruises on the Caspian Sea, its construction should be completed in 2023.

“We have reflected all the main areas of cooperation in tourism in the draft cooperation agreement - we expect to sign it in the near future,” Doguzova added.
