The importance of developing the potential of the Kazakhstan-Turkmenistan-Iran railway to further increase the transit traffic was noted by President of Kazakhstan Kassym-Jomart Tokayev and Iranian leader Ibrahim Raisi during a bilateral meeting on the sidelines of the summit of the Shanghai Cooperation Organization, which was held in Samarkand.

During the meeting, the need to use the opportunities of regular ferry service between the ports of the countries on the Caspian Sea was also noted.

Speaking at a meeting of the Council of Heads of SCO Member States in an expanded format on Friday, President of Kazakhstan Kassym-Jomart Tokayev said: "The Kazakhstan-Turkmenistan-Iran railway, which opens the shortest route from East Asia to the countries of the Persian Gulf, has a serious potential."

He also noted that Kazakhstan and the states of Central Asia are dynamically developing transit and transport cooperation, welcomed the implementation of promising projects aimed at ensuring the interconnectedness of the countries of the region.

“We support efforts to expand transport routes between Central and South Asia, develop the trans-Eurasian corridors North-South and East-West,” Tokayev said.

“In general, we are in favor of creating new and modernizing existing multimodal transport corridors and logistics centers,” the President of Kazakhstan added.
