Iran is ready to transport Turkmen gas to Armenia via swap system
Iranian Ambassador to Armenia Abbas Badakhshan Zohuri considers it possible that a new cooperation between Iran and Armenia will start in the near future in the form of a gas swap. This is reported by "Armenpress" agency.
“There are technical and professional issues that are being studied and discussed by the relevant specialists. It would be wrong to talk about something before they are over. Let's wait for the results, but whatever the outcome, it will be in favor of both countries," the agency quoted the ambassador as saying.
The Iranian plenipotentiary added that at the 17th Armenian-Iranian intergovernmental meeting held in Armenia, one of the important topics discussed were agreements in the energy sector, some of which relate to the gas swap.
Iranian Oil Minister Javad Oji said that his country is ready to transport Turkmen gas to Armenia through the swap system, noting that negotiations on transporting gas from Turkmenistan to Armenia have already begun.
In 2004, Armenia and Iran signed an Agreement on the Exchange of Gas for Electricity, which allows Iran to export gas to Armenia for 20 years, in return Iran imports electricity from Armenia.
Turkmenistan is among the top four countries in the world in terms of natural gas reserves, along with Russia, Iran and Qatar.
