Turkmenistan supports India's candidacy as a permanent member of the UN Security Council
“Turkmenistan welcomed the role that India is playing during its current membership in the UN Security Council and highly appreciated the initiatives of the UN Security Council put forward by India aimed at reforming multilateralism and combating terrorism, based on the Indian ideal of “Vasudhaiva Kutumbakam”, i.e. “the world as one family,” Presidents Serdar Berdimuhamedov and Ram Nath Kovind said in a joint statement following talks in Ashgabat.
The parties stressed that the election of India (non-permanent member) to the UN Security Council provided additional opportunities for coordinating efforts on the most pressing issues in the UN based on mutual understanding and a common view and approach to the global world order.
President Serdar Berdimuhamedov congratulated India on its successful chairmanship in the UN Security Council in August 2021 and reaffirmed Turkmenistan's support for India's permanent membership in a reformed and enlarged UN Security Council.
The Security Council consists of 15 members of the Organization. Great Britain, China, the Russian Federation, the USA and France are permanent members of the Security Council with the right of veto. 10 non-permanent members are elected by the General Assembly for two years. Five of them are replaced every year.
The Security Council bears the primary responsibility for the maintenance of international peace and security. It is the only UN body the decisions of which are binding on all members of the organization.
India has been a non-permanent member of the UN Security Council for 8 periods: 1950-1951, 1967-1968, 1972-1973, 1977-1978, 1984-1985, 1991-1992, 2011-2012 and 2021-22.
Along with Brazil, Germany and Japan, India is in the Group of Four (G4) - a group of countries which scale of development is comparable to the permanent members of the UN Security Council, and requiring permanent membership in the organization.
India is a nuclear power and the second most populous country in the world. It is also among the twelve largest economies and the fourth largest market. India currently has the third largest military force in the world. India is also one of the largest contributors to UN peacekeeping missions.
