Central Asian countries agreed to fight the root causes of terrorism under the auspices of the UN

On Thursday, at a high-level conference in Tashkent, official delegations from the Central Asian countries approved an updated Joint Action Plan for the implementation of the UN Global Counter-Terrorism Strategy in the region, thereby agreeing to combat the root causes of terrorism and violent extremism.
The first Joint Plan was adopted on November 30, 2011, in Ashgabat, which demonstrated a high degree of responsibility of the national governments of the region, Deputy Foreign Minister of Turkmenistan Vepa Khadzhiev, who headed the Turkmen delegation at the forum, emphasized in his speech.
“Based on 10 years of experience in the implementation of the first Joint Plan, we are convinced that in order to fulfill the provisions of this document, it will be necessary to put into practice a system for preparing mid-term reviews on its implementation, synchronized with global counter-terrorism reviews,” Khadzhiev noted.
The consensual plan envisages preventing the spread of terrorism by resolving conflicts, contributing to the stabilization of Afghanistan, and eliminating the root causes of terrorism and the conditions conducive to its spread.
The CA states committed to protecting populations vulnerable to recruitment into extremist groups, expanding access to human rights and essential life skills curricula in educational institutions, instilling a culture of tolerance and respect for diversity among ethnic and religious groups, and eradicating discrimination and hatred.
Also, the national governments of the region agreed to take measures to strengthen national anti-terrorism laws, strengthen cooperation and coordination between law enforcement agencies to ensure border security and prevent the movement of terrorists, and stop the financing of terrorism.
