Afghanistan and Turkmenistan signed an agreement on the power transmission line project
Afghanistan has signed an agreement with Turkmenistan on a transmission line project for the newly commissioned Nur al-Jihad substation in western Afghanistan, the Afghan energy company De Afghanistan Breshna Shirkat (DABS) reported on Friday.
“After four days of negotiations held in Kabul between DABS officials, members of the visiting delegation of Turkmenistan and representatives of the Turkish company Calik Enerji, it was signed a contract on expansion the power supply of the Nur al-Jihad substation from 110 kV to 220 kV,” the company said. The project involves the construction of a double-circuit power transmission line.
The delegation of the Ministry of Energy of Turkmenistan paid a visit to Kabul to discuss legal and technical issues of cooperation on energy projects, including the Turkmenistan-Afghanistan-Pakistan power transmission line.
Afghanistan is facing power shortages. According to DABS officials, the country needs 850 megawatts of electricity per year, of which 620 megawatts are imported from Uzbekistan, Tajikistan, Turkmenistan and Iran, and 230 megawatts are supplied from domestic sources.
On January 25, DABS reported that due to technical problems in the electricity system of Central Asia, import of electricity from Uzbekistan to Afghanistan was suspended, and DABS was able to connect Turkmen electricity to Kabul for the first time.
