Turkmenabat launches production of glycyrrhizin from licorice


Construction of an enterprise for the production of glycyrrhizic acid starts in Turkmenabat. The new factory in the structure of the “Buyan” complex in Lebap, subordinate to the country's Ministry of Health and Medical Industry, will process licorice root and produce from it 390 tons of unrefined glycyrrhizic acid per year.
The enterprise, which is scheduled to be put into operation in two years - in January 2024 - will be oriented for export.
The Italian company Adipson Ind Srl, which will supply the technological component will take part in its equipment.
Glycyrrhizic acid (which gives licorice sweetness) is an anti-inflammatory agent with antiviral activity. It is used as part of various drugs, including for the prevention and treatment of liver diseases.
The International Journal of Antimicrobial Agents published data of doctors from the Medical College of Huazhong University, Wuhan Province (China), who evaluated the effectiveness of glycyrrhizic acid in the treatment of patients with COVID-19. A scientific publication notes the high level and therapeutic potential of glycyrrhizin for the treatment of COVID-19.
