Hydrologists plan to irrigate the Misrian plain

The Karakum Canal with a length of 1,445 meters crosses the territory of Turkmenistan from east to west, transporting the waters of the Amu Darya almost to the Caspian Sea itself. Specialists of the State Committee for Water Management plan to increase its length by another 200 kilometers, directing water to the southern and southwestern lands of the Balkan region - to the Misrian plain. Today, under the sands of the Misrian plain, numerous historical monuments are hidden, starting from the II millennium BC - the cities of Dehistan and Dzhurdzhan, the settlements of Madau-Depe, Izzatkuli and Tangsykyldzha. This means that earlier the waterless desert was inhabited and flourished, brooks murmured on its territory, numerous gardens bloomed. Today, experts plan to return its former greatness to the plain by extending the Karakum Canal and completing the construction of the Bereket (18 million m3) and Danata (45 million m3) reservoirs used for drinking, industrial and agricultural purposes. This will increase the level of moisture reserves, increase the irrigation of fields and return thousands of hectares of land to circulation. In addition, throughout the whole canal, other hydraulic structures are under construction: pumping stations, blocking and regulating objects, the reservoirs of Garashsyzlyk and Hauzhan are being reconstructed to increase water supplies. Not only technical, but also biological methods are used to clean the bottom from sand and silt - in 2018 16 tons of herbivorous fish fry were released into the Karakum River. Along the man-made river, coastal zones are cleaned, where gardens, vineyards, melons, mulberry trees and other crops are planted, and park-forest zones are created. In support of the Karakum Canal Development Project, the Altyn Asyr Lake construction project is being actively implemented. It is designed to solve pollution issues and salinization of soil surrounding irrigated land. Together, these measures will help to multiply the area of land useful to farmers and significantly improve the ecology of agricultural regions.
