Ashgabat to host Sambo World Championship in 2020


On March 22nd, at the meeting of the Executive Committee of the International Sambo Federation (FIAS), held in Moscow, it was decided to hold the 2020 World Sambo Championship in men and women in the capital of Turkmenistan, the Ministry of Sport and Youth Policy told ORIENT. In addition to Turkmenistan, Greece claimed the right to hold the tournament, but by a majority of votes the members of the FIAS executive committee approved Turkmenistan as the organizing country for the Championship. Azat Muradov, general secretary of the Olympic Committee of Turkmenistan, said that the tournament is planned to be held in Ashgabat, the organizers have extensive experience in holding major competitions and full support from the country's leadership. It is assumed that the prize fund of the tournament will be 216 thousand dollars. FIAS President Vasily Shestakov noted that competitions until 2021 should be held at a very high level, as the Federation will be watched by representatives of the International Olympic Committee. On November 30, 2018, Sambo received temporary recognition from the International Olympic Committee (IOC) and will be represented at the Olympic Games in Tokyo 2020 as an exemplary sport.
