The National Center for Special Olympics of Turkmenistan (NCSOT), a public charitable organization engaged in the rehabilitation of people with Down syndrome and intellectual disabilities through physical training and sports will hold an event on March 24, dedicated to the International Down Syndrome Day, aimed at supporting people with this pathology. As part of the action for children, animators will perform with an entertainment program, and there will be a presentation of commemorative gifts. In one of the previous publications ORIENT already told readers that March 21 was declared International Down Syndrome Day on the initiative of the Boards of the European and World Down Syndrome Associations. The date was chosen because this genomic pathology is associated with three copies of chromosome 21 (Trisomy 21). The special members of the NCSOT are people with Down syndrome and intellectual disabilities of various categories and different age groups from all over the country. The state policy guarantees the protection of their rights, and the center provides practical and emotional support to families with special needs, organizes and conducts festive events for them in order to make the lives of these people brighter. Since 2003, the center’s athletes have been takening part in the World Winter and Summer Special Olympics, the competitions of the International Down Syndrome Sports Federation and other tournaments taking place in the world, and regularly win various medals in them. So, at the World Summer Special Olympic Games held in Abu Dhabi from March 8 to 22, 2019 with the participation of athletes from 190 countries, the NCSOT athletes took part in seven sports and were rather successful, having won eight medals of various denominations. The most successful performance was in the rhythmic gymnastics competitions, in which the Turkmen athletes won three gold, one silver and one bronze medals. One gold and one bronze were won at the tennis tournament, and badminton players took one silver medal. The title of Excellence in Physical Education and Sports was conferred on NCSOT Director General Tofik Iskanderov for his contribution to development of sports for people with disabilities.
