Kenya hosts United Nations Environment Assembly
The 4th meeting of the United Nations Environment Assembly, which is the supreme body that tackles the most important environmental issues facing the world today, is taking place in the capital of Kenya, Nairobi.
The Forum in the main city of Kenya, where the headquarters of the United Nations Environment Program (UNEP) is located, has gathered a record number of participants compared to previous years. The delegates include heads of states and governments, ministers, representatives of the business industry.
The main theme of this meeting is innovative solutions to environmental problems and issues related to sustainable consumption and production.
In this regard, the meeting participants will consider three main aspects of environmental protection:
1. environmental problems associated with poverty and natural resource management, including sustainable food systems and food security;
2. the life cycle of approaches to the efficient use of natural resources, energy, chemicals and waste;
3. innovative sustainable business development in times of rapid technological change.
“We can build a sustainable and inclusive society in which only sustainable consumption and production methods will be applied, as well as solve environmental problems, while not leaving anyone behind,” said Assembly Chairman, Minister for the Environment of Estonia Sim Kisler.
In turn, the acting head of UNEP, Joyce Msuya, said:
- We must change our approaches, reconsider the attitude to the things that we use. After all, you can achieve development and growth without increasing the volume of resource consumption.
The resolutions adopted at the end of the Assembly will have a significant impact on the environmental agenda, in particular, on the implementation of the Paris Climate Agreement and the achievement of the SDGs.
The forum also held exhibitions, meetings, round tables and presentations.
The United Nations Environment Assembly was established in June 2012 during the United Nations Conference on Sustainable Development (RIO + 20) and has been held every two years since.
