Turkmenistan considers SCO experience useful against the background of global challenges
President Gurbanguly Berdimuhamedov, speaking at the summit of the Shanghai Cooperation Organization as a guest of honor, noted the objectively growing role of this organization against the background of global challenges of the time. The experience of such multilateral interaction is required for concerted efforts to reduce the impact of the consequences of the pandemic, restore economic and transport connectivity on the continent.
Berdimuhamedov invited the SCO member states to participate in an international conference of landlocked developing countries, which Turkmenistan will host jointly with the UN in April 2022. This will be a good opportunity to discuss specific mechanisms of transport cooperation in emergency conditions and in post-crisis periods, the Turkmen leader noted.
Regarding the pandemic, the President reaffirmed the position of Turkmenistan, advocating a consolidated fight and the establishment of a systemic dialogue between the medical communities of countries, WHO and other UN agencies.
President Berdimuhamedov recalled the initiatives of Turkmenistan to create a program on the WHO platform for studying the coronavirus genome, a multilateral mechanism for the fight against pneumonia, a methodological center for the treatment and prevention of acute infections, as well as the Regional Center for Epidemiology, Virology and Bacteriology for Central Asian countries.
“We highly value cooperation with the SCO and are convinced of its potential for the intensive development of the Central Asian region, turning it into an important transport, logistics and economic center of continental importance, a strong link in stability and partnership in Eurasia,” President Gurbanguly Berdimuhamedov said.
The SCO summit in Dushanbe was attended by the heads of the member states: President of Kazakhstan Kassym-Zhomart Tokayev, President of Kyrgyzstan Sadyr Japarov, Uzbek leader Shavkat Mirziyoyev, Prime Minister of Pakistan Imran Khan, as well as leaders of states with observer status. Chinese President Xi Jinping, Russian President Vladimir Putin and Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi participated remotely.
