Turkmenistan and the Russian Federation adopted a Joint Statement on the No First Placement of Weapons in Outer Space
Ministers of Foreign Affairs of the Russian Federation and Turkmenistan Sergei Lavrov and Rashid Meredov signed a Joint Statement on the No First Placement of Weapons in Outer Space (NFPWS). This is reported by the Russian Foreign Ministry. “The document became the next step in the globalization of the international initiative on NFPWS, showing the determination of states to join efforts to prevent an arms race in outer space (PARS)”, the message says. It also emphasizes that “as the only measure of transparency and confidence to date being implemented for the purposes of PARS, this initiative is a significant political factor in promoting equal and indivisible security for all, as well as increasing the predictability and sustainability of the states’ exploration and peaceful use of outer space. In the Joint Statement, the Russian Federation and Turkmenistan highlight the need to conclude an international treaty banning the placement and use of weapons in outer space, and call on countries not participating in the NFPWS initiative to consider the possibility of full-scale accession to it.
