TV channel, which worked for 18 years in Great Britain, had its license revoked
China Global Television Network (CGTN) has expressed disagreement with the decision of the British media regulator Ofcom to revoke the license to broadcast in the UK from the English-language channel CGTN and with Ofcom's refusal to accept the license transfer application.
Despite the fact that the company from the very beginning provided all the requested information, cooperating with the British authorities, the decision was not made in its favor.
The English-language channel CGTN has been broadcasting in the UK for eighteen years, collaborating with leading British media and organizations. The channel's correspondents have interviewed some of the most famous politicians including Tony Blair, David Cameron, Theresa May and Boris Johnson.
Earlier, the Russian TV channel RT was exposed to similar risks of losing its license.
Labourists urged Ofcom to revise the news agency's license in light of the “alarming revelations” in the Russia report.
In a letter to Ofcom chief executive Melanie Dawes, opposition party minister of culture, media and sports in the shadow office of the opposition party, Joe Stevens, pointed to a court ruling that RT reporting was “harmful” and asked to “urgently” review RT's license.
Commenting on this message, RT editor-in-chief Margarita Simonyan wrote: “Ofcom, let us remind you, is an 'independent' media regulator that the government should not influence in any way.”
