Google has presented an updated fitness app that uses smartphone camera capabilities to measure breathing and heart rate. “We see a huge number of smart devices that have more and more sensors. The same sensors can be used for health”, said Shvetak Patel, Google health technology group head. For example, using the Fit app for Google Pixel smartphones, the movement of a person’s chest during breathing can be detected, and his breathing rate can be calculated. And when a fingertip is moved to the lens, the app will determine how fast the heart is beating depending on how your skin color changes when as blood is pumped. Data is processed by smartphones. Users will have the option to save the results to their accounts at Google data centers. The Fit app also allows users to monitor their activity throughout the day. “If you think about health, then the journey does not end at the hospital”, Patel said. Google Fit already uses phone sensors to track a person’s steps and count calories. In the future, the application will be available for other smartphones with Android and iOS.
