New laboratory equipment arrives in Turkmenistan to strengthen diagnostic capacity

WHO has brought new laboratory equipment to Turkmenistan to expand the country's COVID-19 testing capabilities. The delivery was part of a collaboration between the WHO office in Turkmenistan and the country's Ministry of Health and Pharmaceutical Industry to enhance pandemic preparedness and response, and in particular to combat the spread of the virus variants.
New equipment includes kits for detecting the COVID-19 virus and two Rotor-Gene devices used to test COVID-19. They will be installed in regional laboratories where polymerase chain reaction (PCR) tests are performed.

From the first days of the COVID-19 pandemic, the WHO office in Turkmenistan has been coordinating the work of partner UN agencies, international organizations and others in support of the national healthcare and the preparedness of the country's medical institutions for the spread of acute respiratory infections, including COVID-19.
This included the purchase of materials and equipment, the total cost of which in 2020-2021 was $ 2.8 million. The procurement efforts helped to support the comprehensive measures of the Turkmen Ministry of Health to prevent the spread of infections.
All these activities are carried out within the framework of the National Preparedness and Response Plan developed by the Ministry of Healthcare of Turkmenistan in cooperation with UN agencies.
