Beach volleyball, rowing and 3x3 basketball are among the additional sports on the request of the German Federal Government and the authorities of North Rhine-Westphalia to host the World University Games in 2025. All three optional sports will be included in the program of the Summer World University Games in addition to 15 compulsory sports (archery, rhythmic gymnastics, track-and-field, badminton, basketball, diving, fencing, judo, swimming, taekwondo, table tennis, tennis, volleyball and water polo). Boxing, equestrian sports, golf, handball, ice hockey, karate, sport climbing, shooting and triathlon were also nominated for additional sports. “We have looked at interesting options for enriching the traditional portfolio of the World University Games and are pleased with our choice. We are looking forward to a vibrant sports program in 2025”, said Jörg Foerster, Chairman of the German University Sports Federation. “I can only welcome the decision to include 3x3 basketball in the World University Games 2025 program. It is perfect because it is a young and spectacular sport”, said Ingo Weiss, President of the German Basketball Association.
