The immunity duration after COVID-19 is determined

The immunological memory of a person who has had a coronavirus-induced disease is remained at least for eight months. This was stated by Australian scientists in an article published in the electronic library of Science Immunology. In the course of scientific work, the researchers found that after infection, the SARS-CoV-2 coronavirus generates long-term memory of B cells for up to eight months. This can protect the body from complications at re-infection. “SARS-CoV-2-specific antibodies and B-cell response were studied in 25 patients with confirmed COVID-19 with samples obtained between 4 and 242 days after the onset of symptoms,” added the scientists. 36 blood samples were taken from the volunteers. As it turned out, the number of antibodies began to decrease in 20 days after infection, but memory B cells that recognized one of the two components of SARS-CoV-2 – the acanthoid protein and the nucleocapsid – were detected all these months. The study was conducted by a team of specialists led by a Professor in the Department of Immunology and Pathology at Monash University (Melbourne) Menno van Zelma. In July, Chinese scientists warned that many patients who have had the coronavirus may face problems of restoring immunity. Some of them have a decrease in the level of lymphocytes in the blood, the number of which does not reach the norm even after 11 weeks after recovery.
