The Caspian Convention will let Turkmen gas to Europe
Discussions about the division of the Caspian Sea, which have been conducted over the last two decades, have come to an end. The Caspian countries agreed on the demarcation of the sea, and the relevant Convention on the Legal Status of the Caspian Sea should be signed in Astana in 2018.
The project details have not yet been disclosed, but it is known that the seabed will be divided into sectors, and the issue of laying pipelines along the Caspian seabed will be agreed only between those states whose sectors they will pass.
Experts believe that this means that after signing the document, Turkmenistan and Azerbaijan can build the Trans-Caspian gas pipeline without asking the consent of the other Caspian states.
The construction of this pipeline will ensure the supply of Turkmen natural gas to the European market via Baku and Istanbul.
Earlier, Russia and Iran voted against this project, believing that before determining the legal status of the Caspian Sea, such a large-scale work on the seabed can only be carried out with the consent of all the Caspian littoral countries.
