The national futsal men’s team of the Solomon Islands has headed to Ashgabat to take part in the 5th Asian Indoor and Martial Arts Games. The team nicknamed Kurukuru is led by coach Jerry Sam. The drawing procedure, held in mid-August, has included this sea-locked nation into Group A, along with Turkmenistan, Vietnam, Chinese Taipei and Hong Kong (China). The first game the islanders will play with the team from Hong Kong on 16 September. The match with Chinese Taipei is scheduled for 18 September 18, with Turkmenistan – on 19 September, and with Vietnam - on 20 September. Kurukuru is considered one of the powerful teams in Oceania, as evidenced by four wins running in the regional futsal championships in 2008-2011 and recent fifth champion title was obtained last year. However, outside the region, the team still has no any notable ups. In addition to futsal, Solomon Islands will be represented in weightlifting and athletics. In these sports competitions, the main contenders for medals are the champion of local and oceanic tournaments, runner for long distances, Sharon Firisua, as well as gold medalist of the Pacific Games - weightlifter Jenly Wini.
