Turkmenistan has prepared next National Report on Biodiversity


The United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) jointly with the State Committee for environmental protection and land resources in Turkmenistan organized a seminar on discussion of the 6th National report to the Convention on biological diversity (CBD). The event was part of a regional project of UNDP and the Global environment facility to provide technical support for the preparation of such reports.
The meeting was attended by representatives of various ministries and departments directly or indirectly related to the conservation and sustainable development of living resources of nature - specialists of provincial branches of the State Committee for environmental protection and land resources of Turkmenistan, employees of state nature reserves and teachers of higher educational institutions.
The participants had the opportunity to discuss in a multilateral format the structure of the report and the timing of its submission. The main sections of the 6th national report were also analyzed, covering such topics as legislation, the current state of biological diversity in Turkmenistan, the government's efforts to protect the country's flora and fauna, sustainable use of biodiversity, habitat and many other issues where human influence is evident.
In addition, the document includes the latest information on the status of wild populations, the state of ecological complexes.
- The drafting of the 6th Report is very important because it demonstrates that Turkmenistan fulfills its obligations under the Convention, the country's active position in addressing global issues of conservation of biodiversity component and highlights the next steps of Turkmenistan in the field of environmentally sustainable development, mentioned Natia Natsvlishvili, the Resident Representative a.i. of UNDP in Turkmenistan.
In turn, researcher of the laboratory of forests and pastures of the National Institute of deserts, flora and fauna, Guljemal Kurbanmamedova, noted that the national report helps to understand the current situation with the population of the species to assess their habitat, to trace dynamics of changes.
The organizers of the seminar expressed hope that the 6th National Report of the UN Convention on biodiversity will be approved by the government of Turkmenistan and officially submitted to the UN CBD Secretariat in the near future.
According to National Institute of deserts, flora and fauna, at the present time in Turkmenistan there are about 20 thousand species of flora and fauna, including 7 thousand plants and mushrooms, 12 thousand of invertebrates and 750 vertebrates.
Turkmenistan joined the Convention on biodiversity in 1996, thereby demonstrating its commitment to addressing global issues of biodiversity conservation and its commitment to environmentally sustainable and safe development.
The Convention on Biological Diversity (CBD), known informally as the Biodiversity Convention, is a multilateral treaty. The Convention has three main goals including: the conservation of biological diversity (or biodiversity); the sustainable use of its components; and the fair and equitable sharing of benefits arising from genetic resources.
