Turkmenistan to update National strategy on climate change in line with the commitments under the Paris Agreement


The workshop on discussion updating the National Climate Change Strategy of Turkmenistan was held in Ashgabat.
The event, organized by the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) and the State Committee for environmental protection and land resources of Turkmenistan, was attended by various ministries and agencies representing such industries, energy, health, construction, industry, transport, as well as UN agencies – UNICEF, UNFPA, WHO.
Since the approval National Climate Change Strategy in 2012, there have been major transformations in international agenda on the global climate situation.
In December 2015, the member countries of the UN Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC) adopted new multilateral instrument – the Paris agreement, which fixes the transition to a new model of economic development based on the gradual abandonment of traditional technologies of extraction, processing and use of fossil resources in favor of "green" technologies.
In 2016, Turkmenistan ratified the Paris agreement and, along with other countries of the world, made a voluntary commitment to reduce greenhouse gases, as well as informed the UNFCCC Secretariat about the choosing of low-carbon development path.
In this regard, the participants of the meeting discussed the main activities of Turkmenistan in the field of climate change to fulfill the obligations under the Paris agreement.
Special attention was paid to the analysis of the results of the Third National Communication of Turkmenistan under UNFCCC, which allow to determine priority areas for adaptation and mitigation of climate change.
In their speeches, experts of ministries and departments reported on the activities carried out to implement the National strategy and shared their visions on the process of updating this document taking into account sectoral development programs.
