WHO and UNICEF launched a Hand Hygiene Joint Initiative
The World Health Organization and the United Nations Children’s Fund have launched the “Hand Hygiene for All” joint initiative aimed at maintaining hand hygiene.
The global campaign, which brings together national governments, the private sector, and also international partners, is intended to support the availability of hygiene products, especially among vulnerable groups, and to foster a culture of hygiene.
“Hand hygiene has always been important to prevent a number of infectious diseases. Now the world is struggling with the new COVID-19. One of the most effective tools for preventing its spread is hand hygiene. To control COVID-19, we must make hand hygiene accessible to all,” is said in a joint statement of UNICEF Executive Director Henrietta Fore and WHO Director-General Dr Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus.
They call leaders to increase investment in hygiene, water and sanitation, as well as in the prevention of infectious diseases.
Thus, the campaign will develop comprehensive roadmaps for countries and allocate resources to support global and local hand hygiene efforts. Target groups, in their turn, will facilitate the exchange of knowledge, as well as monitor global progress in this area.
