Afghanistan asks international community for assistance in combating COVID-19
Afghanistan appealed to the international community for assistance in the fight against the coronavirus pandemic, media quoted Deputy Health Minister of the country Wahid Majro.
Majro called upon international donors to “help the Afghan people and Government at this critical juncture”. As he said, the coronavirus threat in the country has reached its “peak” now, having asked the population to stay at home and be in contact with healthcare workers.
According to the Afghan Ministry of Health, 168 cases of coronavirus infection were detected in the country the previous day, nine of them died. Since the COVID-19 outbreak, more than 3.3 thousand infections have been diagnosed, and more than 100 deaths have been recorded in the country.
At the weekend, on the instructions of the Afghan Government, bakeries in Kabul started giving out bread, but the Ministry of Health warned that this could worsen the situation with coronavirus. “Bread is handed out in bakeries, but due to this many people gather together. This has more minuses than pluses, because the virus is spreading intensively”, Afghan Health Ministry representative Vahidullah Mayyar said.
According to media, approximately 250 thousand families received bread with the support of the Kabul Municipality and 2.5 thousand bakeries.
Turkmenistan sent another humanitarian aid a week ago to the southern neighbor. Food products from Turkmen manufacturers were delivered to the Afghan province of Faryab.
