Turkmenistan joins ECOSOC Commissions for Social Development and on Science and Technology
Turkmenistan has been elected as a member of another two bodies of the Economic and Social Council – the UN Commission for Social Devel-opment (for 2021-2025) and the UN Commission on Science and Tech-nology for Development (for 2021-2024). The Commission for Social Development (CSocD) is the key UN body in charge of the follow-up and implementation of the Copenhagen Declara-tion and Programme of Action. It meets once a year at the United Na-tions Headquarters in New York City, usually in February for about two weeks and considers key topics on social development. The Commission on Science and Technology for Development (CSTD), established in 1992 to provide the General Assembly and ECOSOC with high-level advice on relevant issues, acts as a forum of science and tech-nology questions and their implications for development and the formu-lation of recommendations and guidelines in these fields. The Commission holds annual one-week sessions in Geneva in May. The United Nations Economic and Social Council (ECOSOC) serves as the central forum, responsible for coordinating the economic, social, en-vironmental and other issues within the UN system. The ECOSOS has 54 members, elected for three-year terms by the General Assembly. Turkmenistan joined the UN Economic and Social Council for the period from 2019 through 2021. The country also joined the Executive Board of the World Food Program for the period from 2020 through 2022, the UN Commission on Popula-tion and Development from 2020 through 2024 and the UN Commission on Narcotic Drugs from 2020 through 2023. Earlier, Turkmenistan was elected as a member of the Commission for Social Development from 2014 through 2017 and of the Commission on Science and Technology for Development from 2014 through 2016.
