Turkmenistan and UN to join efforts amid COVID-19

In Ashgabat, the first meeting of the Joint working group between the Government of Turkmenistan and the United Nations on socio-economic impact of COVID-19 took place.
- Coronavirus pandemic is likely to have longer-lasting socio-economic consequences than it was expected. Governments around the world are providing unprecedented support to households, enterprises, and financial markets to mitigate the effects of the pandemic. Although this is critical for a quick recovery, there is considerable uncertainty about the future economic landscape after the pandemic,” emphasized Ms. Elena Panova, UN Resident Coordinator in Turkmenistan in her opening speech, focusing attention on the UN Secretary General’s appeal to take urgent measures to mitigate such effects on vital activity of people.
In this regard, the UN country team in Turkmenistan created a working group on socio-economic impact of the pandemic. Within the meeting, the results of preliminary analysis of potential socio-economic effect on Turkmenistan, as well as potential risks for the most vulnerable groups of the population were presented to the participants. In addition, they familiarized themselves with the measures implemented by Turkmenistan to reduce the negative impact of global crisis amid COVID-19 on the socio-economic situation in the country.
“I am happy that the issue of socio-economic impact of the pandemic is a priority on the agenda of the government of Turkmenistan,” underlined Ms. Panova, noting the willingness of UN agencies to support their national partners in the development and adoption of appropriate measures.
