Environmental projects in Turkmenistan: Karakum desert, water and green cities


President Gurbanguly Berdimuhamedov signed resolutions under which the Ministry of Agriculture and Environmental Protection of Turkmenistan will adopt a package of documents defining international cooperation in a number of areas in the environmental field.
In particular, a Protocol on amendments to the Agreement on the Central Asian Desert Initiative (CADI) – Conservation and Sustainable Use of Turkmenistan Deserts – will be adopted in collaboration with the Michael Zukkov Foundation for Nature Conservation (Germany).
Within the framework of this project, specialists from reserves of Turkmenistan, which also includes desert ecosystems, are carrying out joint filed research with scientists and international experts, and working on preparation of a nomination dossier for etalon, unique sites of Karakum desert for inclusion in the UNESCO World Heritage List.
The Ministry of Agriculture and Environmental Protection of Turkmenistan and the UN Development Program will also sign a 2020 Action Plan on the three ongoing projects.
One of them is related to adaptation of the climate impact and ensuring the socio-economic stability of the population who work in agricultural industry in arid regions. The second project is aimed at sustainable development of green cities in the country with Ashgabat and the coastal Awaza as pilot sites.
The third project is related to improving the energy- and water efficiency, renewable energy and power-saving technologies in water and agriculture industries.
