World Meteorological Day
Annually, on March 23, at the initiative of the World Meteorological Organization, World Meteorological Day is held under the auspices of the United Nations. This event is celebrated by 189 member countries of the WMO. On March 23, 1950, the Convention of the World Meteorological Organization entered into force, which proclaimed the formation of the Organization, and the holiday has been celebrated since 1961. This year World Meteorological Day is dedicated to the theme: “Climate and Water”.
In accordance with the Decree of the President of Turkmenistan in January 2019, the National Committee for Hydrometeorology under the Cabinet of Ministers of Turkmenistan was placed in management of the Ministry of Agriculture and Environmental Protection and renamed the Hydrometeorology Service of this Ministry.
Employees of the Hydrometeorology Service under the Ministry of Agriculture and Environmental Protection of Turkmenistan celebrate their professional holiday in a new administrative building equipped with up-to-date technology. The new facility was built as part of the comprehensive modernization of the Turkmenhydromet, initiated by the Ukase of the President of Turkmenistan on August 7, 2013.
Weather stations of Turkmenistan are part of the WMO unified observation network. Here, specialists who record changes of hydro meteorological factors and perform an important task of providing the most important sectors of the country’s economy and the population with information about the current state of the weather, notifying them in advance of all possible natural phenomena, serve day and night.
Turkmengidromet considers its birthday to be July 14, 1926, when the Turkmen Meteorological Bureau was established, which united all local meteorological stations and weather observation points, although the first studies of meteorologists and forecasters on the territory of the country began much earlier – at the end of the 19th century.
Today, the Hydrometeorology Service of Turkmenistan has more than one hundred meteorological, hydrological and agrometeorological stations and posts located throughout the country – in deserts and plains, in mountains and foothills, along the coast, nearby rivers and large reservoirs. Turkmen Hydrometeorology has been supplemented with thirty new automatic weather stations, 28 of which are located in the regions, and two are operating within the borders of Ashgabat. The new stations automatically record humidity, soil surface temperature, and air temperature, and measure amount of precipitation.
The result of all this great work – weather forecasts for the next hours, days, weeks, which are published in mass media, on the Internet portal www.meteo.gov.tm and in numerous Internet applications. In addition, you can always find out the weather by phone, where you will be told in detail in Turkmen and Russian about the actual weather situation in the capital at the moment and for the next day.
