National Council of Turkmenistan: the switch to two-chamber system of parliament was discussed in Ashgabat
Today, in the morning, President Gurbanguly Berdimuhamedov held a meeting of the Constitutional Commission, TDH State News Agency reports. The issues related to the transition to a two-chamber system and the unification of the Mejlis (Parliament) and the Halk Maslahaty (People’s Council) national forum into a single system of representative and legislative bodies as well as introduction of relevant amendments and additions to the basic law of the country were reviewed at the meeting. During the meeting of the Constitutional Commission, the draft of the corresponding Constitutional Law, prepared by the Mejlis together with the Cabinet of Ministers and other state bodies, was considered. The draft law includes relevant proposals and initiatives received by the commission of political parties, civil society and local authorities. “The draft was developed as part of the initiative to transfer the country’s legislative body to a two chamber system, with a view to wide its powers and to improve the ongoing activities in future,” TDH informs citing the head of state. Meanwhile, a new body will be called the National Council of Turkmenistan. It will be comprised of a legislative chamber – the Mejlis, and a representative chamber – the Halk of Maslakhaty.
