The Global Report on human development for 2019 is presented in Ashgabat. The main theme of the document, published by the UN Development Program is “Beyond income and beyond averages, beyond today: Inequalities in human development in the 21st century”.
“We should move away from measuring progress by average wages or average growth rates and delve into the essence of human development. This change in thinking about progress and growth is vitally important to start searching better solutions for everyone,” said Ben Slay, UNDP Senior Economist.
The Report examines the manifestation of inequality in human development that goes beyond the today’s income level and average performance. It raises the question of what forms of inequality are of importance, and what is their driving force.
UNDP reviews the Report on human development as a platform to support the achievements of Sustainable Development Goals. In the context of the climate crisis and radical technological changes, inequality in human development reshapes. According to experts, precisely climate change and technological changes will determine the development contours in the 21st century.
“Turkmenistan has already made great progress towards achieving the SDGs, but there are constant development issues that need to be decided. We are pleased to see the level of the country’s government interest the and its readiness to work together with UNDP to improve its indicators on the SDGs and human development,” said Natia Natsvlishvili, acting permanent representative of UNDP in Turkmenistan.
About 40 years ago, the founder of the human development theory, Professor Amartya Sen, asked a simple question: “What is equality in?” His answer was simple: “Equality is in what we care about in order to build the future we seek.
As it is noted in the Report, the human development index, on an average, shows impressive progress in various areas, especially with a sharp decline in child mortality rates.
