For the first time operation on restoration of hearing with the help of implant was performed in Turkmenistan
In Turkmenistan the first cochlear implant surgery was performed. It was carried out in Ashgabat, in the International Centre for Treatment of Head and Neck Diseases with assistance of German experts - professors from Germany.
Surgeon- otorhinolaryngologist Johannes Zenk and anaesthesiologist Klaus Tchaikovsky together with Turkmen doctors performed a successful operation to restore hearing of a deaf child.
Cochlear implant surgery is an effective method of surgical treatment of sensorineural hearing loss. It is an installation of hi-tech system - a microchip with an electrode - in structure of the internal middle ear. From above the hearing aid is put on and it perceives sound, transfers magnetic waves to the chip, implanted under the skin and by the electrode the impulse goes to the internal ear. A person starts to hear.
This system gives full hearing, but sound is different, not that we hear. And so that it is perceived by the brain and interpreted, rehabilitation is necessary. Operation is long, difficult, and complex but the bulk part of work should be done now during rehabilitation and training of the child with doctors- audiologists, psychologists, speech therapists, neurologists.
By the universal statistics, per a thousand of children one is born deaf, two more lose hearing within a year. According to the World Health Organization data, almost 278 million persons in the world have a lower hearing, 210 million face this problem at the mature age. Every year hearing disorder is diagnosed with 798 thousand new-borns during the postnatal period or in their first months of life.
Experts of the whole world agree in the opinion that correction of hearing with cochlear implant surgery is one of the greatest inventions in the sphere of medicine of the 20th century, that have restored hearing of thousands of people in the world.
