IV International Petanque Tournament was held in Turkmenistan

On September 16, the 4th International Petanque Tournament “Ashgabat Tissot Open 2018” organized by Petanque Turkmenistan Club and co-sponsored by the world-famous watch company Tissot was held in Ashgabat. In Petanque the objective is to score points by having boules closer to the target than your opponent after all boules have been thrown. This is achieved by projecting boules closer to the wooded ball (target), called a cochonnet, or by hitting the opponents’ boules away from the target, while standing inside a circle with both feet on the ground. After both teams have thrown all of their boules, the team with the boule closest to the jack wins the end. The winning team scores one point for each of its boules that is closer than the opposing team’s closest boule. This year, 32 teams representing Turkmenistan, as well as foreign companies and diplomatic missions accredited in our country took part in the competitions. Among them, there are the teams from Turkmenistan “Asia mix”, “Voyage”, the team of the Russian Embassy in Turkmenistan “Bogatyri”, the team of the British Embassy in Turkmenistan “Game of throws”, as well as the teams of the French company “Bouygues”, “Dragons”, “Les bleus” etc.
At the end of persistent game, the teams from Turkmenistan defended the lead and finished atop: team “Monkeys” is at the 1st place, “Asia mix” – at the 2nd place and “Voyage” team – at the 3rd place.
The tournament was held in 4 stages in the “Triple” discipline, three participants of different age categories in each team.
A new sport, Petanque, is actively developing in Turkmenistan since 2014. Turkmen masters of petanque were invited to participate in the international tournaments. In previous open petanque tournaments, teams from Turkmenistan “Altyn Top”, “Pobeda”, and “Voyage” were the winners of the tournament, leaving no chances for experienced opponents from other countries.
In spite of the sport is new for Turkmenistan, the Turkmen Women Petanque team took the bronze at the 4th Asian Beach Games held in Thailand in 2014. It was the first international debut of the team the participants of which first tried themselves in this game only three months prior the competition (!!!). The success attracted great attention of international experts and masters of this sport to Turkmenistan team and stimulated the development of petanque in our country.
