Kazakhstan modernizes land transit infrastructure
In the spring of 2018, construction of two high-speed autobahns will be launched in western Kazakhstan designed to significantly expand transit cargo flows in Central Asia. The 300-kilometer road Atyrau-Astrakhan is planned to be reconstructed into a modern highway. And the future 600-kilometer automobile route Atyrau-Aktobe will facilitate getting to the Kazakh-Russian border in 3-4 hours. In addition, this route will provide an outlet for freight traffic to the transnational highway Western Europe-Western China. The national road operator of JSC "KazAvtoZhol" will act as the general customer for the project. According to Saule Kurzhumova, the head of the department of the “KazAvtoZhol” branch, the transport hub of Atyrau-Astrakhan will increase transit flows from Turkmenistan and Uzbekistan via Astrakhan to the Caucasus, the Black Sea ports and further to Europe.
