UN Secretary-General: the world needs such platforms as the Non-Aligned Movement

The XVIII Summit of the Non-Aligned Movement has opened in Baku, to participate in which the President of Turkmenistan Gurbanguly Berdimuhamedov arrived in the capital of Azerbaijan.
Before the start of the summit, the President of Azerbaijan Ilham Aliyev welcomed the Turkmen leader at the Congress Center.
Among the forum participants are representatives of 158 countries and international organizations, including heads of state and government, foreign ministers, and others.
Azerbaijan hosts the forum within the framework of the Chairmanship over the Non-Aligned Movement in 2019-2022.
Addressing the summit participants, UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres said that the Non-Aligned Movement makes significant contribution to the work of the UN.
Antonio Guterres emphasized that the world needs such platforms through which regional and international organizations may cooperate. “The stability is very important to prevent conflicts,” Guterres said. “Today, competition in the world for resources creates instability. To ensure stability, such organizations as the Non-Aligned Movement are required.”
The President of Turkmenistan will deliver an address the summit participants to voice the positions, vision and initiatives of Ashgabat to consolidate efforts within this organization.
The Non-Aligned Movement, uniting the countries that did not join any military-political blocs during the Cold War, was transformed into one of the important multilateral mechanisms. Today, the Non-Aligned Movement is the second political platform after the UN, uniting in its ranks the biggest number (120) of the countries. Turkmenistan has been a member of this organization since 1995.
